Vertical In-Place Inclinometer System for Automated Monitoring
The Kingmach vertical in-place inclinometer system keeps a continuous eye on subsurface movement. Instead of periodic manual readings, this setup uses a string of sensors permanently installed in a borehole. It tracks tilt and displacement along the casing, sending data to a logger or cloud platform. Engineers working on landslide-prone slopes, dam abutments, or retaining walls often want to catch small shifts before they become big problems. With configurable sensor spacing and real-time alerts, the system fits both short-term construction monitoring and long-term infrastructure surveillance. We manufacture the sensors, data loggers, and mounting accessories in house, so customization for tricky borehole depths or data output formats doesn’t slow things down.
Technical Detail
The Kingmach vertical in-place inclinometer is built around a durable array of MEMS tilt sensors connected in series. Each sensor node measures angular deviation from vertical in one or two axes. A typical system can monitor boreholes up to 200 meters deep, though we adjust sensor quantity and spacing based on the expected slip zone. Suspension cables and centralizers keep the string centered in the casing, and the bottom wheel or anchor secures the reference point. The digital output—often RS485 or SDI-12—links directly to our proprietary data loggers, which can trigger alarms when tilt rates cross user-set thresholds. Compared to traditional traversing probe methods, this in-place approach eliminates manual field visits and provides a near-continuous deformation profile. For projects needing real-time integration, the logger pushes data via cellular modem to a web dashboard. Common applications include monitoring excavation-induced ground movement near sensitive structures, verifying dam performance during reservoir filling, and tracking slow-moving landslides over multiple seasons. Since everything from sensor calibration to enclosure sealing is done at our facility, we can offer extended warranties and calibration services that third-party integrators often can’t.

A manual probe is lowered into the casing for periodic surveys; an in-place system leaves sensors in the hole permanently, giving continuous, automated readings without field visits. This is critical when rapid movement or remote access is an issue.
Depths vary by project, but systems above 200 m are common with proper cable support. We work with clients to specify the number of sensors and the spacing to capture the failure zone accurately. Tell our team your depth and we’ll propose a configuration.
Yes. Our data loggers support 4G, NB-IoT, or LoRa transmissions. You can view tilt profiles, time-history plots, and alarm status through a standard web browser. Setup takes under an hour once the logger is connected at the borehole collar.
Generally yes, as long as the casing internal diameter is within 48–85 mm. The centralizers we supply are adjustable to fit common grooved casing sizes. If you’re using a less common type, we can machine custom adapters.
Very little after installation. The sensors are sealed and factory-calibrated; we recommend an annual system check and data validation. The logger battery (if solar-powered) needs panel cleaning, but that’s usually handled by routine site visits.
